Isadore (Irv) Grossman of Rochester, Michigan, died April 12, at home. The son of a cap-maker who immigrated to America in 1910 from Europe, Irv grew up in Jersey City, NJ, and graduated with a B.A. in Chemistry from New York University in 1939. Opportunities were lacking in his chosen field, so he took night courses to become an accountant. He began working for the Defense Department in procurement in Washington, D.C., during World War II. His work took him to Chicago and later to St. Louis, where he met Florence Kaufman, of Parnell, Missouri. They were married in 1947. They moved to the Washington, D.C. area in 1950, where Irv, in his position at the Pentagon, traveled to American military bases all over the world, working on the design of accounting systems. After retiring in the mid-1970's, and always eager for learning and productivity, he took courses in computer programming and spent several years writing business software until his wife's Alzheimer's disease required his full support. He settled in Southfield, Michigan, with her, near their son's home in 1987, and then entered Sunrise of Rochester last year. He was a truly generous man and a devoted father who always made education and encouragement for his two sons his highest priority. He is preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Florence Grossman, and by his granddaughter, Pamela Jane Grossman. He is also survived by his two sons and their wives, Professor Jerrold Wayne Grossman (Suzanne) of Rochester Hills, Michigan, and Dr. Richard Saul Grossman (Kathleen) of Cumberland Foreside, Maine, and one grandson, Conrad Bartlett Grossman, also of Cumberland Foreside, as well as numerous well-loved nieces and nephews. He will be remembered by all who knew him as a modest man who valued kindness and generosity. He was sensitive and respectful to everyone, and he loved and was loved by all who knew him.
