Dr. Leslie M. Werbel



Dr. Leslie M. Werbel, 82, of Ann Arbor, Michigan, died after sunset on 22 November 2013.

The Funeral was held at Beth Israel Congregation of Ann Arbor on Monday, 25 November 2013 at 2:00 PM .

Rabbi Robert Dobrusin officiated. Interment at Beth Israel Memorial Garden in Arborcrest Cemetery, 2521 Glazier Way, Ann Arbor MI 48105.

The family of Dr. Leslie M. Werbel will be gathering through the afternoon of Friday, November 29 at the residence, 1570 Covington Drive, Ann Arbor MI 48103. The phone number is 734-665-0190.

Shiva will begin each day at 11:00 A.M.

Religious services will be held at 7:45 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings.

The family requests only Kosher food be sent to the house of Shiva.

Family members include:
Beloved husband of Phyllis Werbel. Cherished father of Dr. Cheryl (Mark) Good, Debra (Francis) Lucaric and Captain Aaron (Nechumah Getz) Werbel. Loving grandfather of Miranda, Ian and Alan Good, Eliana and Mollie Werbel, and Nikolas Lucaric. Also survived by many loving relatives and friends.

Dr. Werbel was born in the Bronx, New York City, on March 31, 1931, the son of Harry and Ida Werbel. He grew up in Queens attending PS 156. He kept a multi-volume scrapbook throughout WWII interspersed with the scores of his beloved Yankees. After graduating high school at the age of 16, he completed a BS in Chemistry at Queens College in 1951, followed by a master’s degree in Chemistry at Columbia University in 1952. He was drafted into the Army Chemical Corps during the Korean War and served from 1953-1955 discharged as a sergeant. He continued his studies at the University of Illinois completing his Ph.D. in 1957. He spent his entire career working for Warner Lambert Parke-Davis retiring after 34 years of service in 1991. He published over 100 scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals, 6 book chapters, one book and 19 U.S. Patents. In the parasitic disease field Dr. Werbel served as principal investigator for the Army Research Programs in Parasitic Diseases. He was also the program director of the National Cancer Institute’s Cancer Preparations Laboratory and a member of UNESCO, World Bank, World Health Organization, USAMRD, Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, and many other advisory and steering committees. He was an adjunct professor of Medicinal Chemistry at the University of Michigan for 20 years and received the 1988 American Chemical Society Award for Excellence in Industrial Chemistry.

In addition to his professional career, Dr. Werbel was a patron of the arts. He loved big band and jazz and played piano his whole life. He was an avid collector of Oriental and Native American antiques turning this love into The Lotus Gallery which opened in downtown Ann Arbor in 1979, and continued to the present day in a variety of locations.

He met Phyllis Isaacson, the love of his life, at the University of Illinois and they married in Chicago in 1958. They moved to Ann Arbor in 1959 where they were active members of Beth Israel Congregation and strong supporters of local Jewish life.
