Dennis was born on June 4, 1953, in Detroit, Michigan to Stanley and Sylvia Udkowsky Levine. He shared a comfortable childhood with his older brother Gary and younger sister Lori. When his mother Sylvia passed away, also of cancer, Stanley remarried Phyllis Drucker, and sisters Julie and Wendy joined the family.

Dennis was a brilliant student and gifted musician- playing both the saxophone and piano. After graduating from Oak Park High School in 1971, he attended the University of Michigan, graduating with a BSdegree inMay 1975. He stayed in Ann Arbor for medical school, earning his MD degree from the University of Michigan Medical School in June 1979. He subsequently completed a residency in family medicine at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio in 1982. He became a diplomat of the American Board of Family Medicine, a certification which he maintained throughout his professional career. Dennis practiced for many years as a member of the faculty of the William Beaumont-Troy Family Medicine Residency Program in Troy, Michigan, providing both adult and pediatric care, and educating multiple family physicians. Later in his career, he also practiced in both Cadillac and in the Metro Detroit area. He retired from active practice around 2019.

While practicing in Troy, Dennis met and subsequently married Jane Schroeder, and settled in West Bloomfield. Dennis and Jane share two devoted daughters, Terah Berlin and Emily Levine.

During the active years of his life, Dennis particularly enjoyed nature and playing the piano. He was an avid follower of U of M athletics, especially football, and attended games in Ann Arbor on a regular basis. He was a man of strong convictions and was held in very high esteem by his patients, his students, and his professional colleagues.
