The founder’s son has been active in the family business since the 1950s. Near the end of that decade, as the Jewish community began moving northwest from Detroit, he and his father commissioned a modern chapel in Southfield with more space, freeway access and ample parking.
Relocation was completed in 1961, and the 18,000-square foot building has become a landmark. Herbert Kaufman also is a legend in Michigan’s Jewish networks through six decades of philanthropy, extensive involvement and dedication to professional support with a personal touch.
