Samuel Michael Silver was a beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather, Friend, Colleague, and Mentor to many.

Sam (a.k.a Sandy), 74, passed away Wednesday, August 14, 2024. He was born in Paterson, N.J. and lived in Dallas, Texas as a young boy, and Highland Park, Illinois as a teenager.

He was preceded in death by his father, Elihu Silver, from whom he inherited a profound sense of Judaism, and his mother, Carol Silver, an educator who instilled in him a sense of inquiry in educational pursuits and an appreciation of music and the arts at a very young age.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 42 years, Nancy; his loving children, Aaron Silver and Meghan Ward, and Emily Silver and Josh Rubin; and his darling twin grandchildren, Isaac Noah Rubin and Ryan Ari Rubin. He is also survived by his brother, Jonathan, and sister-in- law Orli Etingin.

He received his undergraduate degree in chemistry from Brandeis University, his PhD in virology from Rockefeller University, and his medical degree from Cornell University Medical College. He did his internal medicine training at the University of California, San Francisco, his fellowship in hematology/oncology at the University of Pennsylvania, and later after transitioning from a basic science-focused to clinical-focused career received specialized training in bone marrow transplantation at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle. After 36 years at the University of Michigan Medical School, he retired as Professor of Medicine in the Division of Hematology/Oncology in 2023 and was subsequently named Emeritus Professor. He held numerous positions there including Medical Director of the Medical Management Center, Medical Director of Cancer Center Network Activities, Associate Director of the Faculty Group Practice, Director of Adult Bone Marrow Transplantation, and Assistant Dean for Research.

His clinical practice was devoted to benign and malignant hematology, most recently the rare blood disorder, porphyria. He received the Burgess L. Gordon Award from the American Medical Association for his work on the Common Procedural Terminology Panel (CPT) and the Exemplary Service Award from the American Society of Hematology for which he served in several roles including advisor to the CPT. He served as president of the Michigan Society of Hematology Oncology and received that organization’s inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award. He also served as Chair of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network’s Board of Directors and was active with and received awards from multiple other organizations. His honorifics included Master of the American College of Physicians, Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, Fellow of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and Fellow of the American Heart Association (awarded for work he did on platelet membrane glycoproteins IIb and IIIa). He deeply appreciated the many relationships he built with colleagues in the organizations he served.

He most enjoyed celebrating the Jewish holidays with family and friends. He loved good food and drink, and especially exploring international cuisine. He picked up golf as an adult and enjoyed playing with his wife at their home course, Radrick Farms, and while on vacation.
