Elanna (Kaufman) Broder died at 76 in Farmington Hills after battling ovarian cancer for more than two years. She is survived by her high school sweetheart and husband of 54 years, Rodney Broder, and their two daughters and sons-in-law, Rochelle Broder-Singer and Scott Singer, and Ilyse (Broder) and Lonny Goldsmith, as well as her adored granddaughters, Hannah and Emma Goldsmith, and her darling dog, Lulu. Elanna loved her family, and she also loved to dance. She started taking ballet classes as a child and returned to ballet in her 30s, taking three classes a week and continuing even after cancer surgery. She was also an avid sewer, creating clothing for herself, her daughters, her granddaughters, and their dolls -- and she even made her own wedding dress. An only child, Elanna was born on July 24, 1947 in Detroit to the late Lucille (Fischer) and late Alexander Kaufman. Elanna was only 4 years old when her mother died of complications from diabetes, and she was raised from the age of 5 by her father and stepmother, Grace Kaufman, both of whom died while Elanna was in her 30s. Elanna was also a devoted and beloved daughter to her mother- and father-in-law, Frances and Herman Broder, until their recent passing. Elanna graduated from Wayne State University (BS ‘69), where she also earned a Master of Education (ME ‘75). She taught elementary school in the Detroit Public School System until her eldest child was born. After that, she prioritized being a mom, shuttling her daughters to ballet classes of their own, having the best-stocked pantry in town and making a homemade dinner nearly every night. She attended Hebrew classes to help her children with their homework at Hillel Day School, where she also taught cooking classes. As her children grew older, she started a new career in sales, selling computers to schools in the 1980s and selling digital duplicators and copiers in the 1990s. Through it all she remained a life partner in every way to her cherished husband, Rodney.
