Harriet Jacobson, 80, of West Bloomfield, Michigan, died on 09 October 2024. Harriet, a beloved figure in both the Detroit Jewish community and global magic world, passed away peacefully in Chicago after a short but courageous battle with cancer. Born in Detroit on September 26, 1944, Harriet grew up in the city before moving to Huntington Woods, where she met her high school sweetheart and future husband, Michael. Together, they made their home in West Bloomfield, creating a life filled with love, warmth, and creativity. Harriet remained very close to her family and, in later years, made frequent trips to Chicago to visit her son, daughter-in-law, and especially her grandson.

One of Harriet’s greatest passions was magic. She began her involvement by assisting her son, Magical Matt Jacobson, with his act in the late 1970s. In the decades that followed, she performed as a magician herself and as an assistant to her husband, Michael. Widely known as one of the magic community’s most dedicated supporters, Harriet served as an ambassador for the American Museum of Magic and was active in organizations such as the International Brotherhood of Magicians, the Society of American Magicians, the Invisible Lodge, and London’s Magic Circle. In 2024, Harriet was honored with induction into the Michigan Magic Hall of Fame.

For over 40 years, Harriet attended the annual Abbott’s Magic Get-Together in Colon, Michigan. Sitting in the front row, she became the most called-upon volunteer at the convention. She became so well-known that every time a magician invited her onstage and asked for her name, the full audience would shout out in unison —“Harriet!”

Harriet was also deeply involved in the Jewish community, serving as president of the Michigan region of ORT in the 1980s and remaining an active member until recently. She was an avid traveler and visited many countries, including Japan, Australia, Peru, and Antarctica, creating lifelong memories with family and friends—including her grade school friend, Carole Ebner, with whom she had been planning many more adventures. Harriet also attended magic conventions annually, where she and her longtime friend, Gay Blackstone, sold magic-themed jewelry.

Harriet’s spirit, resilience, and love will forever live on in her family and the countless lives she touched. Harriet was predeceased by her husband, Michael Jacobson, and her parents, Herman and Betty Bloom. She is survived by her son, Matthew Jacobson; daughter-in-law, Leigh Jurecka; and cherished grandson, Levi. She also leaves behind her brother, Bill Bloom, and his wife, Beverly; their son Jason, his wife Margot, and their children Josh and Alexa.

Those who knew Harriet will always remember her warmth and laughter, and may find themselves smiling and calling out - one more time - “Harriet!”
