Ida Gordon, formerly of Ann Arbor, Michigan, died peacefully on January 22, 2024 at home in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She was 106 years old.

To the end, Ida managed her life with clear-headedness and independence, the traits that she brought with her from London, England in 1946. Like many British war brides, she came to the United States to be with her husband, Irving Gordon, who was returning from his service as a GI during World War II. Ida and Irving settled in Owensboro, Kentucky, where their children, Janice and David, were born. From there they moved to southeastern Michigan, eventually settling in Ann Arbor, where for many years they owned and managed a popular children’s clothing store.

After Irving died, Ida relocated to Pittsburgh to be with her daughter and son-in-law. Right up to her 106th birthday last August, she maintained an extraordinary following of friends at her senior residence, Concordia of the South Hills. She spent her last days surrounded by family: Janice, Rob, Laura, and Eddie. They shared lots of good memories. She had an impromptu dinner with friends and attended two piano concerts (where she made a number of requests!). Laura and Eddie escorted her to a hairdresser’s appointment and made sure she made it to one final happy hour at her residence.

During her long life, she had to cope with difficult losses: her husband Irving and granddaughter Abby Kraftowitz. But she was able to carry on and maintain her deep connection to her daughter Janice Gordon and son David Gordon, son-in-law Robert Kraftowitz, granddaughter Laura Kraftowitz and partner Edward Salem, along with her beloved family in the UK: John, Howard, Sonia, Theo, Laurie, Rachael, and Katerina. Life took Ida on a long journey. Her family will miss her very much but will carry her amazing spirit with them always.
