Dear friends and family members,

I'm so sorry that I am unable to join you on this solemn occasion.

Having not been in Michigan for a while, I decided to visit my mother last week. We had a lovely visit.

On Monday, we had dinner together in Heritage House dinning room and talked about old times. Her attendant had made her up a little for the evening, and she looked great. After dinner, she wanted to go for a stroill, so I pushed her in her wheelchair all around the Heritage House, visiting and talking about the different rooms and areas we passed through.

As we neared the baby grand piane, someone asked if I would play. I played and sang a bunch of old songs, as Mom sat right next to me at the keyboard. All the people loved it, and it was a very touching moment.

She had a cough that night, and when I came to see her Tuesday morning, her condition had become serious. There was a lot of fluid on her lungs, and she was struggling to breathe. I sat with her for a while, but she was not very present.

When I came to see her Wednesday, she seemed to have imporved. When she recognized me, she started forward, and gave me the sweetest and most loving smile. I will never forget that.

I flew back to San Francisco that day, and found out the next morning, that she had passed away in the night.

My mother was very kind-hearted and humble woman. I never heard her say anything mean about anyone. She was also a very hard worker, always providing our family with an attractive and clean home, and with healthy and good food. Every single day of my childhood, there was a hot dinner on the table at 6:00. We all sat down to dinner together and there was a lot of conversation. I always loved that.

Later, she discovered she had wonderful organizational skills, becoming active in various organizations, and eventually President of Pioneer Woman.

One of the most surprising things my mother ever did, was to talk to my father into taking ballroom dancing lessons, which they both practiced and enjoyed for years. My father particularly liked the Latin rhythms, which is funny because he was not a man who could very fluently move his hips.

All her life, my mother had good and loyal friendships. She got along well with people, and people liked her.

Because I lived in California for over 35 years, her care has fallen on my brother, Douglas, and my sister, Laura. I thank them both for all the care they provided her over the years.

I wish you all the very best at this time of loss. I know we will all miss, and often think fondly, of my dear mother, Alice Ross.
