ABOUT US (David Techner)

David Techner This family member began his association with THE IRA KAUFMAN CHAPEL as a part-time assistant while in high school and later became a licensed funeral director in 1974. He's an influential leader as past president of the Michigan Funeral Directors Association and a nationally recognized expert on talking with children about death.

David Techner co-wrote a 1993 hardcover book, A Candle for Grandpa, that explains Jewish funeral practices from the perspective of an 11-year-old boy. He applies insights from recollections of emotions and questions at age 9 when his grandfather died, and he was not at the funeral. "That's why I do what I do," explains Techner. He takes time to meet with young mourners, escort them through the chapel and answer questions frankly. His film "Generation To Generation" with Academy Award winning filmmaker Sue Marx was widely acclaimed and received an Emmy for Best Documentary.

Reflection: "Most people perceive my job as being very sad and depressing, but it's uplifting to hear appreciation for our compassionate support and extra attention."
